As a mother, I am sure you are worried about the kind of nutrition your child is getting, especially if he or she is a fussy eater. Nutrition plays a very important role in building the immune system. A strong immune system is our only shield against infections. It becomes really important we work on building a stronger immunity for ourselves and for our kids.

Why is it important to have a stronger Immune System

Immune system is our body’s defense system against infections. Whenever a child catches some infection, if the child’s immune system is strong it will fight the infection faster.  A child with weak immunity is more susceptible to infections.

Role of Immune System

The immune system has multiple roles to play like

  1. Fight infections
  2. Healing the body by repairing the tissues
  3. Removing the dead and harmful unwanted cells

We all want to protect our kids from any sort of infection and diseases. For making sure that our child doesn’t get sick, it is important that we work towards developing stronger immune system.

Nutrition plays a very important role in building the immunity. Most often our meals are filled with calories. Don’t we all love feeding the poori and aloo ki subzi to kids or giving them some fried potatoes to just keep them filled?

These meals may be tasty to eat and even enough for the daily carbohydrate and calorie intake. However, there is another aspect to nutrition and that is correct supplies of micronutrients for the child. Important vital nutrients like Vitamin, A, C, D, E, calcium, iron, and zinc are found in really small quantities in the food.  These micronutrients make the immune system stronger and build the body’s defense.

Deficiency of these nutrients can suppress the immune function and hence can cause adverse effects. The deficiency may also affect the natural immune or defense response of the body and make the child more susceptible to infections.

How to Build a stronger Immune system

Multiple factors affect the strength of the immune system.

  1. Proper Nutrition

It is important that the child eats a complete and balanced meal with essentials nutrients like vitamins, antioxidants for immune functions to grow and work well.

Ideally one should include 2 fruits and 3 vegetables in your daily meals to ensure you are getting wide variety of nutrient supply.   Include nuts like almonds in the daily food to boost the immune system.

While my elder one was never fussy about eating vegetables, she was never quite interested in fruits. On the other hand, with my younger one, it’s yet another twist. She is a fruit lover, so much that she can have only fruits day in and out. In both the cases, I could never be sure that they are getting the required nutrients for their growth and development.

To make sure the girls are getting the correct nutrition and the nutrients for their daily needs as well as for development of their immune system, I started adding PediaSure to their glass of milk.

We have been following the 12-week Growth plan which helps us get expert insights on the right growth of my toddlers.

  • Proper Sleep

A good sleep routine and proper sleep impacts growth and development of a child.  Sleeping is the body’s way of repairing itself and developing immunity.

Sleep deprivation makes the child more susceptible to illnesses as it reduces the immune function. If your child does not take a day nap then it is really important for you to make them sleep on time so that they do not have any sleep deprivation.

  • Exercise

Working out can increase the immunity and it is vital to have proper physical activity for at least 30 mins. Make exercise fun by making it a family ritual. Fun family workouts are a great way to spend some quality time with your children.

With proper nutrition, sleep and workout the immune function of the body can be greatly improved and you can be confident about your child’s health.
