“A healthy and happy woman raises a healthy and happy family.” Do you agree? Women are the real backbones of the family. Therefore, it is important that women take extra care of themselves in illness. Diabetes is a hereditary issue in my family from generations and I was pretty overweight all through my pre 30s life. Hence, I had to make sure that I take extra care and make sure I do not develop diabetes at any point in my life.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is a hormone that enables glucose (sugar) from your blood to enter your cells for energy. If the sugar is not able to get into the cell, it starts building up in the bloodstream and increases blood sugar level. In the long term, high blood sugar can lead to serious health issues related to your heart, kidneys, nerves, and other vital organs of your body.[1]

Types of Diabetes

There are different types of diabetes categories. The most common are:

Type 1 Diabetes

When the body cannot produce any insulin, it is termed as type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the person must manage their condition by administering insulin regularly.[2]

Type 2 Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin but is unable to use it properly. The management of type 2 diabetes includes a combination of weight management, eating healthy foods, and exercising. Most people with type 2 diabetes also need to take oral medications or insulin.[3]

Why is Diabetes Management Important

While having diabetes does not make you more prone to infections, it does increase the risk of complications if you get an infection.[4] This is the reason I keep asking my father if he’s regularly checking his blood sugar levels, doing his exercise and eating well.

If the blood sugar levels are not maintained, it can affect the patient’s vital organs.[5] Thus, it is essential for a diabetic to manage their blood sugar levels. It can be done through medication, weight management, working out, and eating healthy.

Changing everything at once can be tough. Making slow and healthy lifestyle changes is what a person should target to maintain blood sugar levels.

Try to focus on small, achievable goals instead of drastic changes. Small changes may not seem to be impacting initially however if followed as part of your daily routine, they provide great health benefits.

A woman has a lot on her plate on a daily basis. Often while taking care of the family, kids, home and other chores, they neglect their own wellbeing and health. While taking care of her family, she tends to ignore her own illness.

Hence, women need extra care in managing diabetes in India. So, if your mom or mom-in-law or any woman in the family has diabetes, make sure you remind them to take care of their own health as well. Help them make a routine for themselves that includes diabetes management as well.

How to manage your Diabetes effectively

Weight management plays a crucial role in diabetes management. Eating healthy nutritious food along with staying active is important. A few things to keep in mind for effective weight management

  1. Look towards sustained weight loss and weight management over time instead of trying to lose everything in one go.[6]
  2. Include a supplement like Ensure Diabetes Care in your breakfast meal so that you get the required nutrients for your breakfast. Ensure Diabetes Care keeps you fuller for longer and helps in maintaining your blood sugar levels.
  3. Opt for a healthier option for snacking rather than having junk food.
  4. Keep yourself hydrated with an adequate amount of water intake.

To be able to control your diabetes and maintain your blood sugar level one must make some lifestyle modifications including dietary changes and including workouts in your routine. With the right support and help, you can lead a wonderful life!
